Dying Chain Stores in Every State

With the retail apocalypse showing no signs of slowing, some of your favorite retailers may be in danger of shutting down. More than 9,300 stores closed in 2019, according to Business Insider. While beloved brands like Gap, A.C. Moore, Bed Bath & Beyond and Kmart are shuttering hundreds of locations, online shopping is growing at an exponential rate.

In April 2019, multiple outlets reported that online sales beat out brick-and-mortar sales for the very first time in history. Amazon continues to dominate the e-commerce space, and with the ongoing collapse of brick-and-mortar retailers, your favorite brands may end up a thing of the past. Investment firm UBS says 75,000 retail stores are projected to close by 2026 as online retailers thrive.

To find out which chain stores are dying across the country, GOBankingRates compiled retailers that have announced at least one store closure in 2020. The study then took these retailers and found the states in which they had at least one location. The states are ranked in alphabetical order, and each state breaks down the chain stores that can be found there.

It’s important to note that some retailers included other brands they own when announcing these store closures. For example, White House Black Market and Soma are owned by Chico’s and will be directly affected by its terminations. Bed Bath & Beyond’s announcement included Buy Buy Baby as well as Harmon locations. It’s a good idea to check out the dying chain stores in your state — and grab your favorite brands before they disappear for good.
