Dylan Cease pitches five scoreless innings as White Sox beat Indians, 2-0
CHICAGO — Dylan Cease didn’t make it out of the third inning when he faced the Cleveland Indians on July 28.
The Chicago White Sox starter fared much better Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Cease worked out of trouble a couple of times on the way to five shutout innings in a 2-0 victory.
The Sox suffered another injury to their pitching staff when reliever Aaron Bummer exited with left biceps soreness after throwing a strike in the seventh inning. He will be re-evaluated Saturday.
Bummer had replaced Cease, who allowed two hits, walked five, hit one batter and stuck out four.
Cease lasted just 2 1/3 innings in Game 1 of the July 28 doubleheader at Progressive Field in Cleveland. He allowed four runs on seven hits and had one strikeout in his first outing of the season.
Cease benefited from stellar defense Friday.
First baseman Jose Abreu started a nice double play in the first inning, and third baseman Yoan Moncada did likewise in the second.
Second baseman Danny Mendick made a diving stop and throw for an out in the third.
The Indians loaded the bases in the second and fifth innings but came up empty both times.
Bummer entered in the sixth but left early with two outs in the seventh. He threw a strike to Jose Ramirez and was visited by the training staff. He left with two on and two outs. Evan Marshall got Ramirez to fly out to center.
The Sox already are without starters Reynaldo Lopez (right shoulder soreness) and Carlos Rodon (left shoulder soreness) and relief pitcher Jimmy Lambert (right forearm strain). Lopez and Rodon are on the 10-day injured list and Lambert was transferred to the 45-day injured list Monday.
The Sox scored runs in the first and eighth on the way to snapping their two-game skid.
Luis Robert walked in the first, moved to third on a single by Moncada and scored when Abreu hit into a double play. Adam Engel hit a home run in the eighth.
Alex Colome pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
