‘Dynamic’ high school senior dies after collapse at track practice, Nebraska reports say

The day before Hunter Palmer collapsed at track practice, he competed at a high school track meet, according to reports in Nebraska.

The Wisner-Pilger senior won the varsity boys high jump with his personal best 6-1, the Omaha World-Herald reported. He also ran the third lap of a relay, in which his team placed second on Thursday, May 4.

After Palmer collapsed at the following day’s practice, he was taken to a hospital where he died, according to the World-Herald. He was 18.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we can confirm that Hunter Palmer, senior at Wisner-Pilger Schools, has died,” Wisner-Pilger Public Schools said in a statement.

The multi-sport athlete from Wisner competed in many sports, including track, football, basketball, golf, wrestling and baseball, according to his obituary.

He had committed to playing football at Midland University in the fall, the Wayne Daily News reported.

“Heaven gained a great young man,” Midland University Head Football Coach Jeff Jamrog said in a statement shared to Twitter. “Our hearts are heavy and we are all suffering with the pain of the loss of Hunter Palmer.

“ ... Our staff really enjoyed recruiting Hunter,” Jamrog continued. “He was a dynamic young man who was an absolute pleasure to be around. Hunter was someone so special and will never be forgotten. Hunter is gone way too soon.”

Outside of athletics, loved ones said Palmer “loved hanging out with friends, driving around, watching Netflix, lifting weights, singing, and drinking Dr. Pepper.”

His cause of death has not been released.

Wisner is about 90 miles northwest of Omaha.
