Nathalie Kelley has reflected on her difficult time starring in season one of Dynasty.

She played Cristal Carrington in the remake which launched in 2017, but failed to get a handle on the nature of the show, eventually leading producers to make a shock decision.

In conversation with TV Insider, the actress admitted that it was completely down to her lack of energy and commitment to the role.

"I signed on before I ever read the script," she revealed. "There was a basic outline. I think I wasn't up to the challenge of a nighttime soap. I wasn't prepared for that genre. It wasn't something I had experience in.

"At the end of the day, it's up to the artist to make the most of the material that's given to them. I was challenged. I can say that as an artist I didn't dig as deep as I could have."

Feelings of being "stuck" and boxed in by the writing didn't help, either.

The phone call in which she learned that she'd not be returning for season two took Nathalie by surprise, but it woke her up to the "realisation that [she] could have dug deeper".

She added: "I'm actually grateful to the execs at The CW who saw at the time what I couldn't – that it was not the right fit."

Dynasty airs on The CW in the US and Netflix internationally.
