E-bike rider killed by Bronx hit-and-run driver in Hunts Point tragedy

An e-bike rider died following a collision with a hit-and-run driver in the Bronx early Wednesday, cops said.

The victim was approaching Tiffany and Barry Sts. in Hunts Point when a large SUV or small truck rammed into him about 6:30 a.m., police said.

Medics rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, where he died. Cops are trying to determine his identity.

The driver fled without stopping and has not been caught, cops said.

No arrests have been made.

As of Tuesday, vehicles have killed 20 traditional cyclists and e-bike riders in 2023, a jump of 53% from the 13 who were killed by this time last year.

Neither Tiffany nor Barry Sts. have dedicated bike lanes, said Jada Yeboah of Transportation Alternatives.

“For so long our communities of color have been ignored and left to fend for themselves,” Yeboah said. “Nobody should fear death or injury on our streets, and the city of New York failed yet another member of our community today.”

E-bikes, mopeds, motorized scooters and other small battery-powered mobility devices were involved in 21 deaths in 2022 and another six deaths in 2023 as of July 4, Department of Transportation data shows.
