INDIANAPOLIS-Georgia lost one coordinator to an NFL job. Another also interviewed about possibly jumping from college to the pro ranks, but looks to be staying.

Todd Monken talked with two NFL teams about their offensive coordinator jobs, leaving the Bulldog after three seasons running Kirby Smart’s offense.

Co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann seems to be sticking around after he interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles about taking over as their coordinator.

The Eagles announced Tuesday that Seattle associate head coach and defensive assistant Sean Desai will run Philadelphia’s defense, replacing Jonathan Gannon who was hired as Arizona’s head coach after the Eagles’ run to the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia drafted star Georgia linebacker Nakobe Dean last year who Schumann coached, but Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said Tuesday afternoon it wasn’t about familiarity.

“Just got to know him through this process,” Sirianni said at the NFL combine. “I don’t look at it like here’s who I know and here’s what I’m going to do. …All I’m looking for is the best guys for the job. You’ve got to balance different things. Every coach can’t be the same. There’s a tendency to say I’m going to get a different coach and he’s like me a little bit. You don’t want a bunch of the same guys running around, but every coach needs to be detailed in what they do so that’s always the common denominator I’m looking for.”

Monken returned to the NFL as Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator but also interviewed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, an organization where he previously was coordinator from 2016-18.

“I know a lot about Monk,” Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles told the Athens Banner-Herald. “They did a good job down at Georgia doing a variety of different schemes and changing personnel and involving the tight ends and everybody with the offense. I thought he did a good job with that so he was definitely worth talking to.”

Schumann, who turns 33 on March 29, has coached at Georgia for all seven of Kirby Smart’s seasons as head coach and has recruited, developed, and coached a well-stocked position at inside linebacker.

Under Schumann and co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Georgia last season ranked fifth in the nation in scoring defense (14.3 points per game) and led the SEC and ranked 10th nationally in total defense (296.8 yards per game).

Schumann and Muschamp were promoted after Dan Lanning became Oregon’s head coach before the playoff in the 2021 season.

“We’re not afraid to cast a wide net,” Sirianni said. “I know how many good coaches are in college.”

Sirianni said Desai’s “overall knowledge of football,” stood out.

He said the process allowed him “to get to know different people and see who was ready for the job. I think we interviewed a really good group of guys and was really impressed by all of them, actually. At the end of the day, just some experience that Sean’s had calling it, but also I got to do what’s best for the team and I thought Sean was the best guy for the job.”
