Eagles wrap up historic regular season, eyeing playoff run

May 5—WARRENTON — Warren County softball wrapped up the best regular season in program history on Thursday, securing their 17th victory of the year in a home contest against Rocky Mount Prep.

The Eagles soared to a 24-0 victory over the Tar Roanoke Conference opponent, their 10th time this season scoring 20 or more runs.

Guiding their offensive effort was senior catcher Jamari Moss, who leads the nation with an .836 batting average. Moss tallied a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate, driving in a game-high eight runs in the process.

As one of 12 Eagles to combine for 24 hits, the senior backstop was aided by the likes of senior shortstop Tayjah Cooper and freshman second basemen, who combined for seven hits in the win.

Cooper notched three runs batted in with sophomore Tanajah Wallace adding on two hits and three runs batted in of her own.

The ability of Warren County to put the ball in play and put pressure on the Rocky Mount Prep defense was pertinent to their success, as they recorded just one strikeout in 32 plate appearances.

While their offense dominated the headlines and the box score, senior pitcher Mia Fleming quietly turned in a no-hit performance in the circle. Fleming threw a complete game, albeit in three innings, while allowing just two walks and striking out eight Jaguars.

Fleming earned her ninth win of the season in just her 12th appearance, while recording her fifth complete game and fourth shutout.

The complete performance from the Eagles secured an outright Tar Roanoke Conference title after finishing league play without a blemish at 14-0. Weldon, who finished two games behind Warren County, was the only conference opponent to come within single digits of the 1A powerhouse.

With the regular season in the rearview, playoffs are on the horizon for Herley Moss' squad, as they seek their second playoff victory in program history. Their first came just last season in the form of a forfeit against Columbia High School in the opening round.

Warren County currently sits at No. 6 in the MaxPreps 1A East RPI rankings, putting them in the top 80% of 1A programs in the state.

The NCHSAA Playoff brackets will be revealed on Monday before the first round begins on Tuesday.
