Early attendance figures have jumped 37% over last year at the Ventura County Fair, officials said Monday.

Over the first five days of the fair, 146,997 people attended the fair, fair spokesperson Megan Hook said. At the same time last year, 107,097 people had attended.

Hook attributed the bigger crowds to new attractions and an expanded carnival midway. The fair continues through Sunday.

Saturday’s schedule included a grandstand performance by singer Ashanti and brought 40,968 people, the biggest crowd so far at the fair. Sunday’s attendance totaled 39,958 people.

Early in the fair, some people complained of long lines entering the fairgrounds. Hook said fair officials addressed the problems by adding a separate for people who have already paid for their tickets.

The fair was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials reported last year’s final attendance at 270,486 visitors over 12 days, down from 2019’s total of 303,000 people. Revenues still rose in part because of increased ticket prices.

Hook said ticket sales totals are not yet available but said the increase in attendance should mean more revenue. Ticket prices are the same as last year at $15 for most adults.
