Shoppers flocked to HomeGoods in the days after the store opened at Turtle Creek Crossing in Hattiesburg.

Early reviews were positive from most customers.

HomeGoods, 6143 U.S. 98, Suite 10, provides a selection of quality merchandise at excellent values, the company said in a news release. Products are often 20% to 60% below full-price retailers’ regular prices on comparable merchandise, including furniture, rugs, lighting, home decor, kitchen and dining products, bedding, bath, pet accessories, storage and more.

“Our amazing values, brand names, and vast assortment make HomeGoods an exciting destination for shoppers,” said John Ricciuti, president of HomeGoods. “With a large variety of merchandise from around the world, customers will always find thrilling values in our treasure hunt shopping experience."

Most of the customers were excited to see the store open in the former Bed, Bath and Beyond location. Some enjoyed the selection of furniture and housewares. Others appreciated the friendly customer service.

"I was really happy about the new store and all of the beautiful things as well as the kind employees that were all eager to help us find anything," said Sara Royce of Columbia.

Good customer service is more than just an offer of help, Royce said. Sometimes it's the little things that make a big difference.

"One thing that is small to some people but really stuck out to me as a mother was that their changing table had disposable pads, so I didn’t have to get mine out," she said. "Anything even as small as this that helps keep things sanitary for our babies and easier for us, I really appreciate."

Jody Fortenberry of Hattiesburg has shopped at other HomeGoods stores and is glad to see one in Hattiesburg. She and her mother shopped there the day after the store opened.

"It was wild," she said.

But the shopping was good, and Fortenberry came away satisfied with what she saw.

"They have amazing furniture, cool furniture," she said. "I love the opportunity of more selections of kitchenware. You can get really great brands for much better prices.

"I also love the selection of pantry items, canned goods, pastas — they are almost always of superior quality but with very good prices."

Jamie Martin of Hattiesburg also was impressed with the new Hattiesburg store.

"I went last Friday and loved it," she said. "It’s bigger and laid out better than other HomeGoods stores I’ve been in. I found several nice things for a great price and the employees were super friendly."

Not every experience was a good one, however.

Jason Niblett of Laurel said, "Don't buy food at the new HomeGoods in Hattiesburg," after buying a box of Belgian chocolates that were melted.

Niblett said it wasn't worth an extra trip to Hattiesburg to return the box since he lives 34 miles away.

For the most part, however, the feedback was positive and customers walked away happy.

"I shopped there a few days after opening and found it to be arranged well and it was so festive at this time of the year," Linda Seifert said. "The employees were on top of their game, refilling the shelves as quickly as they were emptying. I don’t think anyone can walk in there and not walk out with some treasure."
