Early in-person voting, mail-in ballot application ends Tuesday

Erie County voters have until Tuesday at 5 p.m. to vote early in-person or apply for a mail-in ballot for the May 17 primary.

Voters can vote early at the Erie County Courthouse, 140 W. 6th St., in the Voter Registration and Elections Office, Room 112, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Voters can apply for a mail-in ballot at the same location and time, or online at bit.ly/erie_absent.

Voters can drop off their completed mail-in ballot in-person at the drop boxes outside the Erie County Courthouse or the Voter Registration and Elections Office until May 17 at 8 p.m.

The May 17 primary ballot has nine Republicans running for governor. The winner will square off against Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the lone Democrat on the primary ticket, in the fall.

The ballot also has 11 candidates vying for outgoing Sen. Pat Toomey's seat: four Democrats, including current Lt. Gov. John Fetterman and U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb, and seven Republicans, including retired hedge fund CEO David McCormick and celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Nine Republicans and three Democrats are facing off for a chance to be Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor.

A key matchup in Erie County will be for the 4th Legislative District, where incumbent Republican Curt Sonney, 64, who serves as chairman on the powerful House Education Committee, will retire after nine terms. Five Republicans and one Democrat have lined up in hopes of succeeding him.

Another key race will involve the 16th Legislative District seat, currently held by U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly.

Kelly, 73, a Republican from Butler, will be the lone Republican on the ticket this fall. Vying in the primary will be Democrats Dan Pastore and Rick Telesz.
