Only a few games have been played in the 2021-22 high school basketball season but there are already some takeaways. Here are a few.

Starting over

Asheboro's girls went all the way to the 3-A state championship game last season. But most of the top players graduated, meaning the Blue Comets would have to basically start over in the fall.

The Blue Comets lost their first two games, to Lexington and Randleman, by wide margins. That wasn't unexpected. Asheboro's top returning player is Sion Murrain and she should have a good season. Murrain scored 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the Randleman game.

Veteran coach Don Corry has a rebuilding task. He'll try to do that around Murrain, who is a sophomore.

Randleman reloads

The Randleman girls are coming off a PAC-7 championship with several returning players, so it's only reasonable to expect good things out of the Tigers.

And they opened with a 61-26 win over Asheboro. Gracyn Hall led the way with 13 points while Audra Petty and Elizabeth York had 12 each. Hall averaged 20 points a game last season. Petty and York were double-figure scorers.

Trinity looking sharp

Trinity is off to a nice 2-0 start with wins over 3-A teams Central Davidson and Oak Grove.

The best thing for the Bulldogs is that of their two top players so far are sophomores. Trace Moffitt, a 6-foot-4 post player, scored 22 points in the Oak Grove game while Dominic Payne had 17. A senior, Aidan Blakely, scored 15 points.

Blakely led the Bulldogs with 21 points in the win over Central Davidson. Moffitt scored 15 points and Payne had 9.

Eastern Randolph girls have great opener

It's just one game but Eastern Randolph could be much improved. The Wildcats romped past Jordan-Matthews 58-20 in their opener and some of their best players are young.

Ziera Watson led Eastern Randolph with 20 points. Watson was good as a freshman and figures to be even better now. A freshman, Kenly Whitaker, scored 16 points. Madison Brower had 8 points and 13 rebounds.

Butler shines for Asheboro

Hakemme Butler showed he can be a dominant player by scoring 23 points in the Blue Comets' 71-44 win over Randleman. That game came on the heels of Asheboro's 68-58 loss to Lexington, indicating a nice bounce back. Tramir Martin added 11 points.

Randleman was led by Dylan Wheatley, who scored 17 points. Wheatley, a senior, averaged 13.2 points for Uwharrie Charter last season.

Wheatmore enjoys 2-0 beginning

Wheatmore opened the season in impressive fashion with wins over East Davidson and Oak Grove.

Jagur Williams scored 17 points and Adam Harrison had 9 in the East Davidson game.

The Warriors had balanced scoring against Oak Grove, led by Kaleb Lockwood's 15 points. Dylan Weil and Williams each contributed 11 points.
