Early voting for Louisiana's Oct. 14 gubernatorial primary election ends Saturday

There's still time to vote early for the Louisiana Gubernatorial primary election.

Early voting, which began Sept. 30, ends on Oct. 7. Polls are open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Election Day is Oct. 14, when polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Along with electing a governor and other statewide offices, the ballot will have proposed amendments to the Louisiana Constitution. Most voters will have a state representative race and/or a state senator race on the ballot, as well as a seat on the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, other than military and overseas voters. To request an absentee ballot, visit the Secretary of State's Voter Portal or in writing through your registrar of voters office. The deadline for registrars of voters to receive absentee ballots is 4:30 p.m. Oct. 13, other than military and overseas voters.

Louisiana conducts local and state elections on Saturdays using what is referred to as an open primary system, where any qualified elector may qualify as a candidate, regardless of party, and run for office and all eligible voters may cast a vote in the election, regardless of party affiliation.

All statewide and local candidates in Louisiana are elected by majority vote. A majority vote is one more than 50% of the total votes cast for that office. When one candidate is to be elected, a candidate who receives a majority of the votes cast for an office in a primary election is elected.

If no candidate receives a majority, the top two candidates who receive the most votes advance to the general election. The Gubernatorial General Election is Nov. 18. Early voting is Nov. 3-11 (excluding Sunday, Nov. 5 and Friday Nov. 10 for Veterans Day) from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

Voters who want to vote early for any election may do so in person at designated locations in their parish.
