On the ballot: School Board positions, hospital district seats, statewide contests
Florida has closed primary elections. That means that voters affiliated with parties may only vote for candidates of the same party. So, ballots for Republicans, Democrats and voters registered as NPA — No Party Affiliation — look different.
For instance, on the Democrats' ballot, voters can pick from one of four candidates to run against U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, the Republican incumbent, in the general election. Rubio's seat was uncontested by another candidate in his own party, so that race isn't on Republicans' primary ballots.
The winner of the Democratic primary will move on to face Rubio in the general election.
The one exception is in the case of a universal primary contest. If only candidates of a certain party run for a seat, then all voters have their say in the race.
On all primary election ballots in Lake County, voters will see contests for two nonpartisan Lake County School Board seats, as well as a universal primary for a seat on the North Lake County Hospital District Board, because only two Republicans filed to run for that seat. The results of the primary will decide that race.
In the school board races, the top two vote earners will move on to face each other in the general election, unless one earns 50% of the vote, plus one.
Democrats will see a contest for U.S. senator, governor and lieutenant governor, attorney general and commissioner of agriculture.
Meanwhile, Republicans will see contests for representative in Congress and commissioner of agriculture.
