Early voting starts July 15

Early voting in Anderson and Roane counties begins Friday, July 15, and ends Saturday, July 30, for the Aug. 4 General Elections in each county and the State Primary.

Early voting locations

Anderson County residents can vote early in Oak Ridge at the Midtown Community Center (Wildcat Den) at 102 Robertsville Road from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Other Anderson County early voting locations are the Clinton Community Center,

101 S. Hicks St., and Anderson Crossing Shopping Center, 3310 Andersonville Highway, Andersonville.

Roane County residents can vote early at the First Christian Church, 100 Gum Hollow Road, Oak Ridge. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Other Roane County early voting locations are Harriman Community Center, 631 Clinch St.; Kingston Community Center, 201 Patton Ferry Road; and Rockwood Community Center, 710 N. Chamberlain Ave.

State Candidates

Gov. Bill Lee is running unopposed on the Republican Primary ballot, although several candidates are running in the Democratic Primary. Carnita Faye Atwater is running against Jason Brantley Martin and JB Smiley Jr. in the Democratic Primary. The winner in the Democratic Primary will face off against Lee in the Nov. 3 state election.

In the Republican Primary, Sandy Casey is running against incumbent Chuck Fleischmann for the Third District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Meg Gorman is running unopposed in the Democratic Primary for that position.

Republican Earle Segrest is running against incumbent Randy McNally for the Fifth District seat in the Tennessee Senate. No Democrats are running in the primary for that position, but voters can, as with other positions, write in a person's name.

For Tennessee House of Representatives, District 33, incumbent John D. Ragan is running unopposed in the Republican Primary. In the Democratic Primary, James “Mike” Brewer and Jim Dodson are vying for the nomination.

For Tennessee House of Representatives, District 41, Ed Butler is running against Bradley Hayes and Michael C. Swisher in the Republican Primary. There is no Democratic candidate in that race.

Tim Hutchison and Scott Smith are running for State Executive Committeeman for District 5 in the Republican Party. Jack Vaughan is running unopposed in the Democratic Party.

Terry Frank and Amy Jones are running for State Executive Committeewoman on the Republican side, while Anne W. Backus is running on the Democratic side.

Anderson County candidates

A sample ballot is available online on the Anderson County Election Commission website. It has also been published in the newspaper.

Current Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank, District Attorney General Dave Clark, County Trustee Regina Copeland and Public Defender Ann D. Corria and Circuit and Criminal Court Judge Ryan Spitzer are all running unopposed. M. Nichole Cantrell is running unopposed for Chancellor.

In the County Commission races, voters can vote for two County Commission members for their district.

Republicans Rodney M. Jennings and Tyler Mayes and independent Tracy Wandell will run for District 1, which includes the Claxton and Bull Run precincts.

Republicans Michael Foster and Denise Palmer and independent V.L. Stonecipher will face off for District 2, which includes Clinton, South Clinton and North Clinton precincts.

Republicans Lindsay Smith and Shelly Vandagriff and independent Joshua Anderson will run for District 3, which includes the Andersonville, Fairview, Norris and Glen Alpine precincts.

Republicans Tim Isbel and Amy Jones and Independent J. Shain Vowell are running for District 4, which includes Lake City Middle, Rocky Top, Briceville, Clinton Middle and Rosedale precincts.

Republicans Robert McKamey and Jerry White are running unopposed for District 5, which includes Clinton High, Marlow, Norwood, and Dutch Valley precincts.

Republicans Anthony Allen and Steve Mead and Independent Catherine Denenberg will run for County Commission District 6, which includes Oak Ridge City Hall, Robertsville, and West Hills precincts.

Republicans Sabra Beauchamp and Steven Poppick and Democrat Steve Verran will run for District 7, which includes the Highland View, Pine Valley and Glenwood precincts.

Republicans Myra Mansfield and Jake Martin and independents Bob Smallridge and Phil Yager will run for District 8, which includes Emory Valley, Woodland and Hendrix Creek precincts.

Sheriff Russell Barker, a Republican, is running against independent Rusty Carr.

Independents Derek Setzer and Steven Williams will run for constable in District 1, while independents Shannon Gray and Jason Stokes are running for constable in District 2. William Jones is unopposed for constable, District 3. Buck Cockran, Fred Gilliam and Travis McCarter are running for constable, District 4.

Running unopposed are Victoria Bowling for General Sessions judge, Division I, Matt Tuck for General Sessions judge, Division II, Brian Hunt for Juvenile Court judge, Rex Lynch for Circuit Court clerk, Jeff Cole for county clerk, Tim Shelton for register of deeds and Gary Long for road superintendent.

For Anderson County Board of Education, running unopposed are Republicans Jo Williams for District 1, Teresa Portwood for District 2 and independents Scott Gillenwaters for District 6 and Don Bell for District 7.

Oliver Springs

Oliver Springs will have a municipal election. Joseph H. Van Hook will run for judge. Ramona Walker will run for court clerk and finance officer.

Several judges are running for retention: Jeffrey S. Blevins, Sarah K. Campbell, Holly Kirby, Sharon Gail Lee, Roger A. Page, Kristi Davis, Thomas R. “Skip” Frierson, John W. McClarty, Mike Swiney, Andy D. Bennett, Frank Clement, Neal McBrayer, Kenny W. Armstrong, Arnold B. Goldin, Carma Dennis McGee, Steve Stafford, Robert Montgomery Jr., James C. Witt Jr., Jill Bartee Ayers, Timothy L. Easter, Robert L. Holloway Jr., Robert W. Wedemeyer, John W. Campbell Sr., J. Ross Dyer, Camille McMullen and John Everett Williams.

Election Day

Anderson County hours on Election Day are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Roane County hours on Aug. 4 are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
