Earn a living making salads? This woman does and she’s about to open a Macon storefront

Patrice Scott of Macon earns a living making and delivering salads.

She’s done so well via Facebook and Instagram that she’s about to open a storefront in east Macon.

The Salad Spot 2 is a resurrection of sorts.

In August 2017, with an associate degree in business from Central Georgia Technical College, Scott launched The Salad Spot via social media.

She’d post photos of her salad creations, announce in Facebook groups that she’d be in Macon or Forsyth on a certain day and set a cutoff date for orders to be messaged.

Scott was doing so well that by October 2018, she opened her first storefront, The Salad Spot at 275 North Lee St. in Forsyth.

But a divorce would close the business within about seven months, Scott said, and she moved to Atlanta.

While living in Atlanta, she still posted her salads on social media and delivered them but the business just didn’t take off like it had in Middle Georgia.

In late spring of 2021, Scott moved back to Macon.

She again started posting her salads in Facebook groups, including two popular ones that sprang up during the COVID-19 pandemic to help uphold local business owners: Support Macon Restaurants and Robins To-Go.

With a strong product and personal delivery, The Salad Spot 2 took off.

How it works

Scott still operates the same way with a shout out via Facebook and Instagram to Macon or Warner Robins or another location that she’ll be in the area with photos of her salads and a deadline to place an order.

The posts include photos of salads piled high with meats, fruits and veggies. She also offers meatless options, like the all fruit salad.

“I feel like, personally, salads don’t have to be boring,” she said.

Customers can pay by Cash App, Venmo and Chime or by a debit card through an invoice she’ll send them.

Scott loads up the salads in her 2008 Chevy Silverado and delivers them individually, or she meets customers at a designated location for them to pick up their orders.

Most of the salads come in two sizes, regular and large, and start at $11.99 depending on the type of salad selected. Then there are add-on prices for extra meats, fruits and vegetables.

Among her top sellers are The Stack, The Seaside, The Grilled Chicken and The Chef.

The Stack includes cheddar cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggs, red and yellow peppers, black olives, crab, shrimp, ham and grilled chicken on a bed of iceberg lettuce. It comes only in a large and costs $16.99

The Seaside includes cheddar cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, carrots, yellow peppers, shrimp and crab on a bed on a bed of iceberg lettuce for $13.99 regular or $15.99 large.

Another top seller is the “Create Your Own” salad that starts at $10.99 with one meat. She also offers wraps as well as pan salads, which are large salads that come in a large pan and can feed up to 10 people.

The Storefront

Scott’s new storefront will be located at 2440 Shurling Drive, Suite 102, the spot of a former Subway restaurant in east Macon.

The setup is perfect for salad making, Scott said.

In much the same way, customers would build a sandwich at a Subway, they’ll be able to build a salad, sub or wrap at The Salad Shop 2, she said.

In addition to subs, she may add smoothies and smoothie bowls to the menu.

Scott plans to run the business with her fiancee, Kimberly Browner, who surprised her on Christmas Day by proposing at a family gathering.

“She helps me prep,” Scott said. “She helps me deliver. Anything I need her to do, she helps me.”

Scott said she’s looking forward to laying down the personal delivery aspect of her business. But she also knows a lot of her customers depend on her for this service.

She expects she’ll either hire delivery drivers or partner with delivery services like DoorDash.

“A lot of customers have gotten used to deliveries,” she said.

Scott said she’s at least four weeks out from opening and hopes to be operating in the storefront by the end of February.

“I want to paint it and make it mine,” she said.

Once she has a grand opening date, Scott expects to announce it on Facebook. Also, Scott was part of a collaborative to create The Comforter’s Cookbook, a cookbook designed for people who are grieving to help them eat better. She plans to give away some copies of the cookbook at the grand opening.

Additionally, Scott has two other businesses, both online: Lady Poole Boutique and Serenity Scent Shoppe.

Operating hours for The Salad Spot 2 are expected to be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with the restaurant closed Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to the delivery option to be worked out, the restaurant will offer dine-in and takeout.

“I am extremely shocked and very pleased … Never did I think it would take off the way that it did,” Scott said.
