Earth Day 2023 activities in Stark County area

Here are some events planned in and around Stark County to celebrate Earth Day.

Canton

The Wm. McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, 800 McKinley Monument Dr. NW, will celebrate Earth Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 15 as part of Science Saturday. There will be an open-house-style workshop with activities and crafts for kids of all ages. This workshop is included with paid admission to the museum. Because the museum’s Science Department will be out doing community services on Earth Day, April 22, the museum will recognize Earth Day a week early.

Jackson Township

  • The Canton Audubon Society will hold the Alan Dolan Memorial Earth Day Nature Walk at Jackson Bog State Nature Preserve, 7984 Fulton Dr. NW, at 9 a.m. April 22.

  • Kent State University Stark campus, 6000 Frank Ave. NW, will hold its free annual Earth Day celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. April 23 at the Campus Center and Pond & Wetlands Area. The free, family-friendly educational celebration for elementary school-aged children includes music, educational demonstrations, a guided pond walk, face painting, digging for fossils, make-and-take crafts and a scavenger hunt. Mineral City

Atwood Lake Park, 9500 Lakeview Road, will have an Earth Day cleanup from April 15 through 23. Walkers, hikers, and boaters are encouraged to pick up and bag litter. Fill your bag and stop by the Maintenance Building between 3 and 5 p.m. on April 15 or 22 to earn a coupon for one free night of camping. One coupon per household. Enter a drawing to win a cooler filled with Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District prizes and gift certificate by posting a picture of your cleanup efforts on the Facebook or Instagram pages with #MWCDEarthDay2023 and tag the park. North Canton

The North Canton Public Library, 185 N. Main St., will hold an Earth Day Recycle Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22. Visitors can create an Earth Day-inspired craft. Organically grown plants from Know Your Roots will be for sale behind the library by the lockers. Goodwill and electronics recycling collections will take place in the St. Paul's church parking lot (behind The Howlin Bird and Chamber of Commerce). Electronics recycling: Ecycle Solutions of Ohio says “if it plugs in, we’ll recycle it.” This electronic recycling service is offered free with the exception of CFL bulbs (50 cents each), tube-style fluorescent bulbs (25 cents per foot), flat-screen TVs ($10), and flat-screen monitors ($5). Tube TVs and monitors will NOT be accepted this year. Paper shredding: Bring up to three boxes of paper per household to the City Hall parking lot for shredding by U-Shredd-lt. This program is sponsored by the city of North Canton.

Perry Township

  • Stark Parks will hold an Earth Day Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. April 21 at the Wildlife Conservation Center at Sippo Lake Park, 800 Genoa Ave. NW.

  • Stark Parks needs volunteers for Earth Day litter pickups beginning at 9 a.m. April 22 at Deer Creek Reservoir in the Alliance area, Esmont Park in Canton Township and Iron Horse Trail in Alliance. A representative from Stark Parks will provide instructions and materials (gloves and trash bags) to volunteers. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring layers of clothing. Washington Township

Beech Creek Botanical Gardens and Nature Preserve, 11929 Beech St. NE, is seeking volunteers of all ages to help with Earth Day tasks from 2 to 4 p.m. April 23. Projects may include trail maintenance, garden cleanup, or native garden conservation. Volunteers should dress for the weather, bring work gloves and meet at the Visitor Center. Sugar Creek Township

The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, will celebrate Earth Day from 2 to 3:30 p.m. April 22 with free, family-friendly activities. Learn about water quality by performing a bio-survey at the pond and see how plants act to filter runoff. Make plantable seed paper and portable compost to take home with you.
