Earth Day: A day to get outside, honor and care for planet

Here are a few events happening:

  • Potter Park Zoo Party for the Planet, 12-4 p.m.: The zoo is participating with more than 120 zoos and aquariums across the country in this exploration of conservation issues. Hands-on activities, information stations, and demonstrations are planned. Party for the Planet is included in the regular admission prices. Admission is free for children under 3; $5 for 3- to 12-year-old children; $8 for Ingham County adults, and $15 for non-Ingham County adults.

  • Potter Park Zoo Earth Day BioBlitz Exploration, 5-8 p.m.: Using smartphones and iNaturalist, participants will embark on a guided walk along the Lansing River Trail to find and document as many species as possible. Registration is required for the free event.

  • Capital City Clean Sweep, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Downtown Lansing Inc. and the downtown community plan to clean plant beds, sidewalks, parking areas and alleys around Washington Square. The gathering spot will be 112 S. Washington Square. Volunteers are asked to sign up for participation.

  • Document Destruction Month: Every Wednesday in April, during normal 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. business hours, people can visit Friedland Industries, 405 E. Maple St., to drop off confidential documents they want shredded with a $5 donation to the Mikey23 Foundation, a Lansing organization focused on improving the lives of youth.
