Earth Week Plus offering guided sturgeon viewing May 13

CHEBOYGAN — The Earth Week Plus group in Cheboygan will offer residents a chance to experience a guided sturgeon viewing and hatchery tour on Saturday, May 13.

The Earth Week Plus Adventure program will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. along the Black River.

The enormous and prehistoric lake sturgeon are currently migrating upstream to spawn. Attendees will be able to watch the Michigan State University research team net and tag sturgeon to monitor the adult population and learn about ongoing collaborative efforts to restore and rehabilitate lake sturgeon.

Brenda Archambo, president of Sturgeon for Tomorrow, will guide participants along the Black River to view the sturgeon as she explains what is being done to protect them.

Following the riverbank experience, participants will also visit the nearby sturgeon hatchery to see larval lake sturgeon. The Sturgeon for Tomorrow group assists fisheries managers in the rehabilitation of the species.
