3.6 magnitude earthquake reported Wednesday morning in Illinois, officials say
An earthquake with a 3.6 magnitude shook the area near downstate Standard Wednesday morning, officials said.
According to the United States Geological Survey, an agency which monitors earthquakes, the quake happened at 4:41 a.m. Standard has a population of about 200 people in Putnam County, about 100 miles southwest of Chicago.
The agency says that earthquakes occur in Illinois about once every year.
A magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported June 17, 2021, about 2 miles west of Bloomingdale, Indiana, but reportedly also felt by Chicago-area residents. A 2.4-magnitude earthquake occurred near McHenry on Jan. 30, 2012. The last damaging earthquake happened in downstate Illinois in June 1987.
