Earthquake hits Anderson County near Homeland Park

Early Thursday morning, around 2 a.m., an earthquake measured at a magnitude of 2.11 and struck six kilometers southeast of Homeland Park in Anderson County, as confirmed by The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

According to their website, two people in the area confirmed to have felt movement from the tremor.

"It's a relatively small earthquake," Julie Dutton said, a geophysicist at USGS. "Commonly throughout the east, it's not unusual that some areas have more active faults than others. They release some of the energy that's built up over time."

In April, an earthquake measured at a magnitude of 2.17 hit Taylors, and within the past year, the largest earthquake measured in the state took place in Elgin, registering at 3.6.

Homeland Park is a census-designated place in Anderson County.
