When will East Brunswick High School reopen following water main break?

East Brunswick High School students will continue remote learning for at least the rest of the week after a water main burst under a corridor on Oct. 26.

According to school officials, a water main under the flooring in the Science Wing broke and began to flood the area. The water and electricity were shut down but due to how the system works, the electricity to the whole school had to be shut down.

According to the superintendent, the water line repair involves excavating 6-8 feet below the floor surface.

“We took immediate and proactive steps, guided by our contracted environmental consultants, to ensure we maintained an environmentally safe worksite and school,” said Superintendent Victor Valeski.

In a meeting that took place at Hammarskjold Upper Elementary School on Monday, where residents and parents discussed the closure, Valeski said to those concerned that this could happen again but that the break did not result from the lack of regular maintenance.

While experts said that virtual instruction is not an optimal way of learning for some students, the break from in-person instruction would be as short as possible, with regular classes hopefully resuming Nov. 6.
