East Brunswick planners approve new Lidl grocery store on Route 18

EAST BRUNSWICK - Lidl has been approved for construction on Route 18 at the former Unclaimed Freight site.

The township Planning Board approved Lidl U.S. Operations' application to demolish the existing building at 651 Route 18 and construct an approximately 31,042-square-foot grocery store. The application was heard at Wednesday's meeting.

Lidl, a discount German grocer, is the contract purchaser of the 2.76-acre property.

Lidl operates about 11,200 stores and is active in 32 countries, employing more than 310,000 people globally, according to its website.

In Middlesex County, Lidl has locations in North Brunswick and Woodbridge. Lidl was recently approved to construct a grocery store at 3 Brunswick Ave., Edison.

Lidl first established its U.S. headquarters in Arlington County, Virginia in June 2015, and today sells its products in more than 100 stores across nine East Coast states, its website says.
