The East Coast Surfing Championships had their biggest year yet. Here’s a look at the numbers.

With fewer than 60 days to plan the biggest East Coast Surfing Championships to date, Deepak “D” Nachnani dug his heels in the sand this summer and pulled it off.

The owner of Coastal Edge surf shops was determined to make the 60th anniversary event — held at the end of August at the Oceanfront — memorable. Coastal Edge is the title sponsor of ECSC and helps support its operation. The Virginia Beach Jaycees own the event and led the volunteer effort.

ECSC’s entertainment was bolstered this year with a $750,000 grant from the city — the most ever for a festival.

The event is being lauded as a success. The numbers tell the story:

  • 22,514 people attended at the concerts

  • More than 300 athletes from all over the world participated

  • The Vans Pro competition had a total prize purse of $60,000

  • 142 families — the most in the event’s history — participated in the “supergrom” division for children

  • The first military surf open division was held in honor of active duty and retired military

  • More than $1,000 was raised to help women battling breast cancer during Surf for the Cure event

  • More than 300 volunteers participated

  • Volunteers cleaned more than 1,000 pounds of trash off of the beach

  • More than 4,000 slices of pizza were sold

  • Spectators received more than 1,400 free popsicles

  • More than 25,000 beverages were sold

  • More than 20 vendors displayed their wares

So how did it all the excitement add up for Nachnani?

“What I really liked was the thousands of memories we created over the seven days,” he said.
