An East Gaston High senior will attend UNC Charlotte this fall as a Levine scholar.

Allie Grice wanted to apply for the Levine Scholars program after learning about it during her sophomore year of high school.

“My mom and I were touring Chapel Hill’s campus when my dad called about us getting a letter from the school. We rushed back home and found out I was accepted to the program,” Grice said.

“I was extremely excited. I called my school counselor, who helped me apply and who originally told me about the scholarship,” she added.

Grice had other choices of universities to attend, but says Charlotte won her over.

“I grew up around the city it is located on. It is simply a beautiful campus,” said Grice.

The Levine Scholars program focuses on building better humanitarians and leaders through volunteering and civic engagement. The scholarship is valued at $105,000 covering tuition, room and board and books.

Her leadership skills were demonstrated within her dedication to sports. During her high school career, Grice played basketball, tennis and volleyball.

Through the Levine Scholars Program, Grice will get four summers of leadership and international experiences, and she'll get a grant to use for her own service project.

During the summer, the program will give Grice the opportunity to participate in a technology-free backpacking trip in Lander, Wyoming, for a 25-day excursion.

“I am really looking forward to getting to know my fellow Levine scholars and being away from my phone. Just taking a 25-day detox to focus and enjoy the trip,” Grice said.

While at UNC Charlotte, Grice will major in civil engineering and will minor in Spanish.

Grice says her biggest supporters throughout her journey have been her parents, Brent and Lisa Grice, and her school counselor at East Gaston Jordan Johnson.
