East Jordan Community Pool closed for construction, tentative reopen date in November
EAST JORDAN — The East Jordan Community Pool recently announced that it will be closing down for the rest of the summer and into the fall for construction.
The pool closed down on Aug. 3 in order to replace the roof, which hasn’t been replaced since the early 2000s, according to pool director Ivy Wells. The estimated reopen date is Nov. 11, depending on the construction process.

“Usually with pools being that they’re such a moist environment, they do need to be done every so often and just with roofs in general, even on houses have to be done every so often. So it'd be considered more of a routine maintenance. We didn't have any storm or wind damage or anything done to the roof itself,” Wells said.
When replacing the roof, the pool will also be replacing the drop ceiling with an open concept that includes exposed ductwork and new lighting that will make the space brighter and feel larger.
In addition to the roof, the locker room doors and emergency exit doors will be replaced, as well as an electrical panel. Depending on the budget and time, more improvements may be added as they go.
With the humidity and water, the primary concern when it comes to maintenance is rust. For that reason, the pool will be investing in a waterproof epoxy that will cover the space from floor to ceiling. While more expensive than paint, the epoxy will do a better job of keeping moisture out of the structure.
The pool chose to start this construction during the summer months because that tends to be the slowest season for the indoor pool. Wells said they are hoping to be open for winter, which tends to be their busiest time.
The pool normally hosts the Cruisers Swim Team during their season, which usually goes from the beginning of October to the end of March. The pool is looking for an alternate space for the team to practice in while construction is ongoing.
Once the pool does reopen, Wells is planning to host a reopening event with an open swim and possibly food and goody bags.
While the pool being closed causes inconvenience for some, Wells said the repairs are necessary and will improve the pool for years to come.
“People aren't happy that we're closed, but it's something that has to be done and people understand it has to be done,” Wells said.
