East Lansing Police Chief under investigation

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — East Lansing Police Chief Kim Johnson is on paid administrative leave, City Manager Robert Belleman tells 6 News.

“I can confirm Chief Johnson is on paid administrative leave while the city attorney conducts an internal investigation into an internal complaint,” Belleman wrote in an email to 6 News Thursday night. “Deputy Chief Pride and Deputy Chief Brown are responsible for managing the East Lansing Police Department.  I am unable to comment further on the investigation.”

Johnson was hired to the position in 2020. He is the city’s second Black chief of police.

Before being hired as Chief, Johnson served 30 years with the East Lansing Police Department. He started with the city in 1982 as an officer and gained ranks through the years. He left the city in 2012 with the rank of Captain, a news release from 2020 announcing his hiring as chief says.
