DENVER — East Lincoln baseball standout Garrett Michel has spent much of the 2022 season letting his bat do the talking. Heading into play Tuesday, the Virginia Tech recruit’s 16 home runs ranked third nationally, according to MaxPreps.

But as Michel and his teammates prepared for their 3A baseball playoff opener against Forestview, the Mustangs’ senior slugger didn’t need swift hands to set the tone. His words said enough.

“I told the team they seeded us wherever they did based on our regular season. But that’s gone,” Michel said. “We’re 0-0, we have to come out here and go 1-0. (Late season losses) happened for a reason and we grew from them, and that’s what is going to help us in the playoffs.”

Consider East Lincoln’s late season woes as good as flushed.

Five runs in the fifth broke things open for the Mustangs, who advanced to the second round courtesy of an 8-0 win.

“Regular season is done and over. Conference tournament is done and over. We did some things that hurt us, but those things that hurt us are going to help us grow as a team as we move on in the playoffs,” said East Lincoln baseball coach Chris Matile. “A lot of these guys were around last year when we made a run at the playoffs. I know they’re all excited about the opportunity, and we have some young kids in key positions that just got to do what they do, nothing else. If we can have that mindset, we’re going to be OK.”

The work of Isaac Armstrong helped matters, East Lincoln’s junior hurler ceded no runs on four hits and struck out 11. He also had two hits, one a solo home run in the sixth inning.

“Especially when I get the start, I always try to do everything I can (at the plate and on the mound) and try to help my team,” Armstrong said. “Finishing the season not so strong, coming back and getting a win like this is a big momentum boost for us.”

Tree Spees also went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Graham Smiley added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Mikey Ross and Seth Haigler added a hit apiece.

“You walk me and there are guys one through nine who can put a barrel on a baseball and make teams pay,” Michel said. “You’ve seen it time after time, me and Isaac get walked and those guys come in and do their job. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.”

Seeded 11th, East Lincoln travels to No. 6 Eastern Guilford on Friday. “We’re alive for another day. Survive and advance, that’s the name of the game,” Matile said.
