But it's important for individuals to also be prepared, said Brett Lee, deputy director of the Portage County Emergency Management Agency.

The recent train derailment in East Palestine has raised concerns throughout the state about the possible environmental impact — and the possibility it could happen again.

If the train followed the most direct route on Norfolk Southern tracks toward East Palestine, it would have passed through Cleveland, Hudson and Ravenna, as well as near Kent, before catching fire and crashing in rural Ohio.

Here are a few prevention measures, some the county has taken, and some that would be a good idea for residents.

How would Portage County respond to a hazardous materials spill?

The county has an emergency operations plan in place, as well as evacuation plans that would be activated if necessary, Lee said.

How do I report a possible chemical or hazardous material spill?

The Local Emergency Planning Committee line is 330-296-0222.

How can I make sure I get notifications in a local emergency?

Have you ever been in a public place where everybody's phone alert goes off at the same time? That's a good sign that you'll be notified in the event of an emergency.

Lee said the same tone that alerts smartphone users to Amber Alerts also informs them of things like tornado warnings, severe weather and evacuations. Phone users should check their settings to be sure that these alerts are on, Lee said.

What can I do to prepare for an emergency?

It's a good idea to have a few essentials ready, just in case you're forced to evacuate in a hurry, Lee said. In the event that an evacuation is necessary, have a secondary location in mind where you can go if the need arises, Lee said.

For the same reason, it's a good idea to make sure that warm clothing, blankets and a change of clothes are in your car in case you get stuck in severe weather. It's also a good idea to have things like water and non-perishable food items on hand in case you get stuck.
