East Peoria fire department to add 4th station near Illinois Central College

In the hope of reducing response time, the East Peoria Fire Department plans to add a fourth fire station. The new station will be at 2001 Centennial Drive, near the entrance to Illinois Central College.

“In our line of work, seconds really do matter,” East Peoria Fire Chief Robert Zimmerman said. “The new station will cut those seconds down on calls from that area. Our call volume has increased. Based on where the calls come from and the response time to that area, we thought that’s where the station would need to be located.”

Zimmerman added that the cost of the project is still to be determined. However, the city has received a total of $1.9 million in grants from the state. He expects the city to seek bids for the contract later this summer and hopes construction will begin this fall.

“We’re still engineering and designing (the new facility),” he said.

The timeline for completion of the new fire station will depend on the weather, but Zimmerman is hoping the facility will be operational by the summer or fall of 2023.
