East Stroudsburg University appoints Nancy Jo Greenawalt as interim athletic director

East Stroudsburg University Interim President Kenneth Long announced on Thursday that Nancy Jo Greenawalt will officially become the interim athletic director of East Stroudsburg University upon the retirement of Gary Gray on Monday, Jan. 31.

"I've been a Warrior for 25 years and have tremendous respect for the student-athletes, coaches, faculty and staff," Greenawalt said of her new role. "I am honored that President Long has entrusted me to lead the department over these next few months and look forward to promoting all that is good about Warrior Athletics".

Greenawalt currently serves as the associate athletic director for student success/senior woman administrator. She was previously the academic coordinator for athletics at ESU, organizing the academic support structure for more than 600 Warrior student-athletes.

Greenawalt has been a member of the senior leadership team for the department of athletics since 1998 and brings 38 years of higher education experience to her new position, including 25 years at ESU and 14 at Albright College in Reading. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Albright, her master's degree in physical education from Penn State and her doctorate in administration and leadership from IUP.

While at Albright, Greenawalt was inducted into the Albright Athletic Hall of Fame for her achievements earned as a five-sport student-athlete and head coach for volleyball, badminton and tennis.

"I can think of no one better to lead our Warriors through this transition period than Greenawalt, and I know others feel the same," Long said. "This appointment comes with overwhelming support from the coaches and athletics staff. I know she will work tirelessly, as she always has, with our student-athletes to ensure our Warriors remain at the top of their game."

In her role as interim athletic director, Greenawalt will oversee all aspects of ESU's 22 athletic programs, providing leadership, administrative direction and oversight for all aspects of the intercollegiate athletics department including development and supervision of all programs and department personnel; compliance with NCAA, PSAC, University, and departmental policies; administration of departmental funds and accounts; recruitment of and support for academically and athletically talented students; management and oversight for all athletic department operations; cultivation of strong collaborative working relationships with university constituents and counterparts, university affiliated entities, PSAC conference counterparts and members of the broader surrounding community; involvement in promotion, marketing and fundraising activities for the department; oversight for athletic scholarship programs and their administration; and cultivation of a culture of athletic success, sportsmanship, professionalism and respect at all levels of the department.

Following the academic year, Greenawalt plans to retire after serving the Warrior community the past 25 years and as an administrator in collegiate athletics for nearly 40 years.

ESU will begin a national search for the next Director of Athletics shortly.
