EastEnders fans loved cheeky reference to Ben's changing faces

Tonight's (August 20) EastEnders was a little more off-the-wall than usual.

Phil Mitchell had been getting close to the truth about his attack, and Tuesday's episode saw him confront Ben into admitting his plan to frame Keanu Taylor, and ended up with the famous hard man telling his son that he never wanted to see him again.

All very good and dramatic stuff, there, but what stood out to viewers were the opening shots of the episodes. Phil, preparing to have a showdown with his wild child, looked at a photo of Ben in younger, slightly happier times (he's had a rough life, has our Ben).

But the soap didn't use a photo of a baby-faced Max Bowden. It used a photograph of the Ben from nine years and three actors ago, Charlie Jones.

Charlie Jones played Ben between 2006 and 2010. In that time, his storylines involved being abused by Stella and attacking his friend Jordan with a spanner.

But his most memorable moment was probably when he had a brief and intense love of Lady Gaga's first album (but then, who didn't in 2009?).

Fans very much enjoyed the throwback:

EastEnders continues Thursday (August 22) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
