EastEnders star Mollie Rainford has responded to calls from fans for Cindy Jr to return to Albert Square.

The soap's latest instalment saw Cindy Sr return to Walford after she introduced herself to estranged daughter Cindy Jr — played by Sex Education's Mimi Keene until she exited the show in 2015 — off-screen.

Cindy Sr admitted to her ex-husband George Knight that she'd only had a chance to speak with Cindy Jr briefly, saying: "[It was] just long enough for her to tell me she wished I really was dead."

While fans had been hoping Cindy Jr would return to Walford with her long-lost mum, it seems that such a reunion is unlikely to happen any time soon.

But Rainford, who plays Cindy Sr and George's daughter Anna, has weighed in on the possibility.

Speaking to the Mirror, she said: "Yeah I'd love for her to return, absolutely. I feel like she must be around Anna and Gina's age too so that would be good!"

Michelle Collins, who plays Cindy Sr, also expressed her hopes for Cindy Jr's return last year.

"I have mentioned her, obviously. I can't really tell you too much about her," she told Digital Spy and other media. "But I know she is alive. That's about all I know. But possibly, who knows?

"A lot has happened to her [Cindy Sr]. She's been through a lot and she's almost got PTSD – she is a bit traumatised, but still a very strong character. I think these shows write really well for women and I was really happy with particularly that week and the progression of the script."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
