EastEnders has referenced a 'forgotten' Alfie Moon plot as part of the character's prostate cancer storyline.

In recent episodes, Alfie has been told he has an enlarged prostate and needs further tests to see if he has prostate cancer.

On Thursday's episode (August 17), Alfie confided in Phil Mitchell, whose dad Eric died of prostate cancer, that he was going to the hospital for tests.

Supporting his friend, Phil told him he knew many people who had beaten the disease and also reminded Alfie that he had "been through something like this before".

The line was an apparent reference to Alfie's 2016 storyline where he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, before leaving Albert Square for Ireland with wife Kat.

Alfie's brain tumour storyline was continued in EastEnders spin-off Kat & Alfie: Redwater. However, fans never got a proper resolution to the story.

This week, EastEnders confirmed that Alfie will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in upcoming episodes. The soap is working alongside Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support on the storyline.

Speaking of the new storyline, executive producer Chris Clenshaw said: "When we first embarked on this storyline, we knew it was imperative that we worked alongside Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support to take on and accurately portray such an emotional and pivotal storyline for Alfie, and one that many viewers may relate to.

"Shane [Richie] has thoughtfully portrayed the realities of being diagnosed with prostate cancer with grace and understanding. We hope that this storyline resonates with the audience, and that we represent it as sensitively, and as accurately as possible."
