EastEnders star Navin Chowdhry knows fans aren't very fond of his character Nish Panesar and has apologised for him being "still around" on Albert Square.

Villainous Nish was among the possible victims of the soap's big Christmas whodunit. While he was left fighting for his life after receiving a hit to the head courtesy of Denise Fox, Nish came around and it was Keanu Taylor who suffered an untimely demise when Linda Carter stabbed him to defend Sharon Watts.

Speaking about Nish surviving the murder mystery and being back on his two feet scheming against his wife Suki, Chowdhry admitted being "scared" by some of harsh scenes he has to play.

"There have been moments when we've had scenes and I'll speak to the producer and I'll say, 'I'm going to have to go on the school run and you're making me beat up every woman on Albert Square'. I've been scared," he said (via Daily Star).

"I am aware that everyone wanted him to die at Christmas. I apologise to the audience that I'm still around!" he continued.

The soap star also weighed in on receiving some negative comments from viewers who can't separate the actor from the character.

"There has been the odd comment, there are a few unfriendly messages I've been on the receiving end of. But most people get it," he said.

Despite the occasional backlash against Nish, Chowdhry admitted enjoying unleashing a dark side to play the baddie.

"I enjoy being evil. And we have a good time on set. They often say the best fun you have is when you're doing the darkest stuff," he said.

"Sometimes when you go really dark, the flipside is you have a very fun experience on set."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
