EastEnders star Lacey Turner has praised the work that has gone into Lily Slater’s pregnancy storyline.

Turner’s Stacey Slater has been in the doldrums lately, with her 12-year-old daughter deciding to keep her baby after weeks of deliberation.

Speaking to The Sun, Turner revealed she was initially shocked about the storyline, but praised the producers and writers for tackling social issues.

"I think initially my reaction [to the storyline] was the same as most people's — 'Wow, that is young' — but having done research, it happens," she began.

"A lovely lady sent us a message to say she was in hospital and the girl opposite her was 12 and had just given birth. She wanted to thank us for highlighting the story and portraying what happens in real life.

"We tell stories that there is stigma attached to and we’ve given those storylines a voice which allows the nation to talk about it," she continued.

"It is nice when you get a storyline you know people can relate to and there will be someone out there that might need to watch it to give them the confidence to go ahead and delve into it themselves."

In addition to Lily’s pregnancy, Stacey is also facing financial difficulty following the loss of child support from Ryan, leading her to steal money whilst on a cleaning job. Turner, who made her first appearance on the soap in 2004, added that the story is now more timely given the cost-of-living crisis.

"I have wanted to play a storyline about a family struggling for money for ages and it has come at a time when sadly a lot of people are going through the same thing," she said.

"People are saying, 'Thanks for telling the story, you are telling it really well!' That is all you want when you do this job, someone from the real world to say, 'Good job'. That is the best feedback you can get."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
