Lorraine Stanley has addressed EastEnders producers axing her character Karen Taylor.

It was revealed earlier this year the show's creative team had made the difficult decision to write out Karen after six years on Albert Square.

Speaking to The Sun, Lorraine explained why she had "a mix of emotions" about saying goodbye to EastEnders.

"I was sad, it was a mix of emotions, it's sad but it's exciting as now I can go and do what I want," she said. "You can get a bit relaxed there and a bit comfortable. So I want to be out of my comfort zone."

The actress said she was still waiting to find out how Karen will be written out of the show, but expressed hopes that she will have the option to come back at some point.

"I hope the door will be left open for Karen," she said. "I can't say too much but if they kill me then I would never watch EastEnders again."

Danny Walters, who plays Karen's son Keanu Taylor, recently said it was "a shame" to see his on-screen mum leaving EastEnders.

"I'm just pleased to have worked with Lorraine and known her for five years. It will be a shame to see her go but I wish her the best of luck," he told the Daily Star.

Lorraine isn't the only cast member leaving EastEnders in the coming months. Brian Conley recently confirmed he will be exiting the show to return to live touring and his regular panto performances.

Shona McGarty is also set to leave the soap after 16 years of playing Whitney Dean in order to "spread [her] wings", telling The Sun on Sunday: "I have been trusted with some incredible storylines and have made amazing friendships – and family – which will endure."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
