High levels of tree pollen could cause severe issues for asthma and hay fever sufferers in the UK over the Easter weekend, as temperatures are set to reach as high as 25c in parts of the country.

The so called 'pollen bomb' could see a spike in pollen counts and cause discomfort to many. Charities are urging people with asthma to ensure they carry an inhaler with them at all times, while suggesting hay fever sufferers take medicines such as antihistamines.

Sonia Mude, Head of services at Asthma UK explains to ITV News: "A deadly pollen bomb is due to hit this week, putting people with asthma at risk of a potentially life-threatening asthma attack."

"Around 3.3 million people with asthma are affected by pollen, which can cause symptoms such as wheezing, a tight chest or coughing," continues Sonia.

"Take hay fever medicines such as antihistamines as they stop the allergic reaction that triggers asthma symptoms and keep itchy eyes and runny noses at bay. Everyone with asthma should keep their blue reliever inhaler with them at all times in case of an emergency," continues Sonia.

Ways to ease hay fever this weekend

Hay fever season began early this year, thanks to the unusual sunny spell in February. While spring blossoms and blooming flowers create beautiful sights around the country, for the 13 million people affected by hay fever in the UK, it means having to battle sniffly noses and watery eyes.

As well as visiting your local GP to ensure you get the correct medicines for your health, there are great ways you can help with hay fever in your home.

Some of these include...

  • Maintaining a dust-free environment

  • Keep your pets clean

  • Keep windows closed on house and car

  • Consider buying an air filter

  • Avoid chlorinated swimming pools

  • Wear sunglasses

  • Avoid drying clothes outside
