Katharine Graham is best known as the former publisher of the Washington Post, but we learn more about her in Robin Gerber's play "The Shot."

Showing through April 23 at NJ Repertory Company in Long Branch, "The Shot" stars three-time Emmy-nominated actress Sharon Lawrence ("NYPD Blue").

Graham was the first female CEO of a Fortune 500 company — and she was a survivor of domestic abuse. In "The Shot," audiences will be taken on Graham's emotional roller-coaster, from love and a joyful family life to the dark canyons of despair.

Lawrence has received praise for the role: "a luminescent performance informing us that sexual and psychological abuse knows no boundaries of economy or class or fame.”

“ 'The Shot' is a story for this moment," Gerber writes in a news release. "If women can be abused with impunity, we can be paid less, denied opportunity and autonomy over our bodies. ... I hope 'The Shot' empowers women who suffer intimate partner violence and gives the rest of us a window into an abused woman’s soul.”

Directed by Michelle Joyner, tickets are $60.

Go: "The Shot," through April 23, NJ Rep, 179 Broadway, Long Branch, $60; 732-229-3166, njrep.org.
