A 97-year-old Letcher County woman is the latest victim of the devastating floods that tore through Eastern Kentucky in late July, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Thursday.

The death brings the disaster's death toll to 44.

A photo of Mae Amburgey huddled in her home, surrounded by her possessions and brown flood water, went viral during the immediate aftermath of the flooding. She died more than two months later on Oct. 8, according to news reports from the time.

Her granddaughter told the Lexington Herald-Leader that Amburgey had been staying with family in Alabama, unable to return to her flooded home. She believed Amburgey died from "a broken heart."
