Eastham dedicates its first Veterans monument with special ceremony

Eastham Town Hall.

Eastham officials will dedicate the town's first monument to all veterans who have served in all the branches of the military at 11 a.m. Friday at the 1869 Schoolhouse Museum.

The event comes after a years-long effort led by Lewis Andujar and a committee of volunteers who wanted to recognize veterans who served the country in peacetime and in war. American Legion Post 287 is sponsoring the monument and event with support from the town.

Andujar, a Vietnam veteran, said the 5-foot-tall monument designed by Thomas Blute of Harwich will honor seven branches of the military. It sits on a patio of stone pavers that form a teardrop.

The Veterans Day event will include Daniel Clark, the “Singing Trooper,” and his wife Mary. The names of Eastham’s Purple Heart recipients will be read aloud.

“My feeling is the public needs to be aware of the sacrifices vets have made so we have the freedoms we have,” Andujar said. “It doesn’t come easy."
