Eastlake wrestler Alexis Navarette finds success in District 1-6A

Eastlake's Alexis Navarette has come a long way in a short time in wrestling.

The senior started in the sport 2 and 1/2 years ago after competing in other activities and has become one of the city's top wrestlers.

She began at 148 pounds, but has since become a state qualifier at 138 pounds (last year) and a favorite to return to state this year at 126 pounds.

On Thursday, she finished second in the District 1-6A Tournament, losing 11-9 to another 2022 state qualifier, Isabella Martinez of Pebble Hills.

"Wresting at 126 pounds is perfect for me," Navarrette said. "Since I started at 148, I"ve really put lots of time into training, getting stronger and being more focused. It was tough at 148, the girls were so much taller and it just wasn't a good weight for me. Plus, I've matured and I listen better to my coaches. Carlos Armendariz is a great coach, he's pushed me to be better. My goal is get back to state and finish among the state's best."

Eastwood won both the girls and boys titles on Thursday. The girls finished with 210 points, 30 ahead of Franklin.

Alexis Montes at 120 pounds, Paulina Butler at 138 pounds, Daniela Romo at 152 pounds and Jadine Mata at 165 pounds won district titles for the Troopers.

The Eastwood boys won with 265 points and Montwood was second with 195.5 points. Trebor Moreno, who won a state championship last year for Eastwood, took first at 132 pounds to lead the way for the Troopers. Ethan Franklin at 126 pounds, Elijah Molinar at 138 pounds and Andres Solis at 165 pounds won district titles for the Troopers.
