Eastside baseball in driver's seat after winning Game 1 of SCHSL championship series

Eastside baseball defeated Hartsville 13-0 in the opening game of the Class AAAA state championship series Tuesday night in Hartsville.

The game was stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Mavis Graves, a Clemson signee, started the game for Eastside (21-6-2) and went the distance. He pitched five scoreless innings and gave up only two hits to Hartsville (17-6). He also went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Eagles freshman Peter Mershon went 4-for-4 with a triple and a home run. Cayden Erwin went 2-of-4, while Jack Davis and Lane Schrader combined to go 5-for-6.

Eastside will host Game 2 of the best-of-three series Thursday at 6 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, will be played Saturday at a neutral site determined by the South Carolina High School League
