VERMONTVILLE TWP. — A Holt man was taken into custody on Friday morning following a domestic incident and police search that prompted shelter-in-place advisories in the area of West Vermontville Highway and Bradley Road in Eaton County.

The incident began about 2 a.m. with a 911 call in Eaton County about a 32-year-old man who had threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend, Michigan State Police said. The man was believed to be intoxicated and suicidal, they said.

Eaton County authorities issued an alert about 5 a.m. asking area residents to shelter in place and said state police were looking for a white male wearing a black coat and jeans. Maple Valley Schools placed its elementary school under a shelter-in-place order, but lifted it after the suspect was caught.

After the initial 911 call, state police said, troopers found the man in the area of Vermontville and Bradley and tracked him through a swamp and the Thornapple River. An Eaton County drone unit located the Holt man in the water, and troopers used a canoe to take him into custody, they said.

The man was taken to Sparrow Hospital for treatment of hypothermia. Police said he was intoxicated and they sought a mental evaluation, MSP said, adding the suspect would be lodged at the Eaton County Jail after being released from the hospital, pending formal charges.

As the search for the man continued Friday morning, Maple Valley Schools said in a Facebook message school was proceeding "safely as normal" and noted there would be some delays in bus transportation and drop-offs.

After the man was caught, the school district said on its website it had lifted its shelter-in-place protocol and thanked families for remaining calm.

"Throughout this morning we were in constant communication with our police contacts and received updates as we developed plans to protect and serve our students," officials said in the message. "While there was no danger to our students, this is a good time to review our emergency communications processes so you can be refreshed on how we work to keep you informed.

"While we do not have details about the individual who was apprehended by the police, we do know all of our protocols were followed. I wish you all a peaceful day and encourage you to reference our talking guide on our website for reassuring conversations with your children this evening," the district said.
