The appointment of Max Eberl as the new head of Bayern Munich's football department is set to be agreed on Monday.

Club president Herbert Hainer did not confirm the news on Saturday after the German record champions' 2-1 win against Eberl's former club RB Leipzig. However, his statements, like those of chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen, left no doubt about the decision.

"We announced early enough that we are looking for a new head of football and now we will discuss it on Monday (at a board meeting). And when we have decided, we will also inform you," Hainer told reporters at the Allianz Arena.

Football is at the "forefront" of the club, former Adidas boss Hainer added, saying "And we should also have someone on the board who is responsible for sport."

Dreesen, who succeeded Oliver Kahn as chief executive in May after the former goalkeeper was sacked, said it was important to finally replace Hasan Salihamidzic, fired along with Kahn, on the board.

Christoph Freund became sporting director in September but Bayern have decided to split up the job previously held by Salihamidzic. Eberl is set to be Freund's boss.

"If it turns out the way we all think it will, we will have a new head of football next week," Dreesen said, adding: "More expertise and quality in management" can only be a good thing.

"I believe that together as a team we can still achieve a lot," added the 56-year-old.

Bayern, Bundesliga champions for the last 11 seasons, are eight points behind Leverkusen with just 11 games left but are still in the Champions League. Coach Thomas Tuchel leaves at the end of the campaign in a decision taken on Wednesday. Media reports say Eberl was consulted.

The recruitment of former Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Eberl has been on the cards for a long time. According to dpa sources, Bayern and Leipzig have already reached an agreement on the move.

He was placed on gardening leave by Leipzig in September after being accused of not being committed enough to the Red Bull-backed club.
