Do EBOS Group's (NZSE:EBO) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like EBOS Group (NZSE:EBO), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is EBOS Group Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Over the last three years, EBOS Group has grown EPS by 6.3% per year. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). EBOS Group maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 26% to AU$8.8b. That's progress.

Are EBOS Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

Not only did EBOS Group insiders refrain from selling stock during the year, but they also spent AU$80k buying it. That's nice to see, because it suggests insiders are optimistic.

Is EBOS Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of EBOS Group is that it is growing profits. While some companies are struggling to grow EPS, EBOS Group seems free from that morose affliction. The cherry on top is the insider share purchases, which provide an extra impetus to keep and eye on this stock, at the very least. You still need to take note of risks, for example - EBOS Group has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.

The good news is that EBOS Group is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
