EC women’s hockey shuts out Johnson & Wales on Senior Day, Soaring Eagles men beat the Wildcats on the road

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Elmira College women’s hockey made it a special senior day at the Domes.

Elmira College women’s hockey shut out Johnson & Wales 8-0, for their 5th straight win, on Senior Day. The Soaring Eagles burst out of the gates at the Murray Athletic Center, with 3, 1st period goals. Alayna Toole opened the scoring for EC, sneaking a shot past Leah White of the Wildcats. Minutes after the 1st tally, Erika Goleniak zipped a pass to Emily Lenzen in front of the net, who banked a shot off the post and in for a power play goal. Late in the 1st period, Katie Manning sent a laser shot to the net, extending Elmira College’s advantage to 3-0.

In the 2nd period, Soaring Eagles seniors Madi Morton and Lexi Hoffman helped kick start the scoring. The pair of seniors assisted McKenzie Schmidt’s short-handed goal, to give EC the 4-0 lead. Later in the period, Hoffman added to the scoresheet with another Elmira College goal. In the final frame, the Soaring Eagles closed out the victory with goals from Emma Bradbury, senior captain Claire Meeder, and M.K. Boyle. Seniors Lexi Hoffman and Madi Morton each had a memorable day on the scoresheet. Hoffman recorded 1 goal and 2 assists, while senior captain Madi Morton assisted on 2 goals. Senior goaltender Chloe Beaubien totaled a season-high 22 saves for her 9th career shutout.

After the win, Elmira College recognized their 2023-24 senior class of; Claire Meeder, Kelly Millins, Madi Morton, Holley Riva, Lexi Hoffman, and Chloe Beaubien.

On the men’s side, 5th ranked Elmira College picked up their 2nd straight win. EC defeated Johnson & Wales 5-2, on the road. The Soaring Eagles dominated the first 2 periods with goals from Janis Vizbelis, Nathan Young, Jared Smith, and Jordan Gonzalez. The Wildcats began to chip away at EC’s 4-0 advantage, with a goal from Hayden Haldane early into the frame. Nearly 10 minutes later, Harout Torosian cut Elmira’s lead to 4-2 to put the pressure on the Soaring Eagles. Elmira suffered 2 late penalties in the final minutes of the contest, but responded with a short-handed empty net goal from Elmira native Bailey Krawczyk, to seal the win.

Elmira College men’s hockey will return to the Domes for 2 home contests to close out the regular season. EC hosts Skidmore College on Friday at 7 p.m. then Castleton University, Saturday at 4 p.m.

The EC women will close out the regular season on the road. The Soaring Eagles will take on Plymouth State, Friday night at 6 p.m. then Castleton University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
