ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Elmira College women’s wrestling had a perfect day, playing host to the first New York State Women’s Collegiate Duals.
Sunday was a memorable day for Elmira College wrestling. The Soaring Eagles women’s team hosted the inaugural New York State Women’s Collegiate Duals at Speidel Gym. In the first ever event, EC went 2-0 with commanding victories over D’Youville and Utica. Additionally, local fans witnessed the return of Tioga’s Emily Sindoni to the area. The high school national champ and trailblazing hall of famer, wrestled for the first time at Speidel Gym, as a freshman for D’Youville.
Elmira College and D’Youville each defeated a short staffed Utica team led by the lone Gillian Mills. Between matchups with the Pioneers, EC took on the Saints in the eventual deciding bout. The Soaring Eagles stormed out of the gates at 123 pounds. Megan Edwards pinned Juliana Smith in the 1st period, giving EC a 20-0 edge. Tioga’s Sindoni responded, earning the first points of the day for D’Youville. At 130 pounds, Sindoni put on an impressive performance in a 10-0 tech fall win over EC’s Gabby Bradigan. The Saints added to their total with a 2nd straight win by Madison Wellen, who defeated Leslie Monterrosa via fall.
With the score at 20-9 Elmira, the Soaring Eagles halted the Saints comeback. At 143 pounds, standout Zoey Lints pinned Saniyah Ward in 35 seconds, to extend Elmira College’s lead. In the 155 pound matchup, EC’s Skylah Chakouian defeated Alessandra Elliott via fall late in the 1st round. At 170 pounds, D’Youville added their 14th points of the contest with a win from Elizabeth Stricklin over Hazel Dahlquist. At 191 pounds, Tayana Labady closed out the match with a win via fall in 53 seconds, over Riley Wentlent. EC added another statement win in the extra bout. Horseheads grad Hailey Berry picked up a win via fall over Adriana Lagoe.
The Elmira College women return to the mats next Sunday, February 4th for Frostburg State University Open.
On the men’s side, it was an impressive day for 2 Elmira College wrestlers at the Jamestown Community College Open. EC’s Darius Green finished 2nd in the 285 pound bracket, while Hollis Berry earned 3rd at 157. In the 285 pound bracket, Green started his day with a pinfall win over Alfred State’s Roy Gamble. Green followed up the win with a tech fall victory over Gavin Thompson of Pitt-Bradford. The EC senior won 19-3, thanks to 5 takedowns and a nearfall in 2 periods. In the final, Green trailed Gannon’s Eli Reese 7-6 before being pinned in the 3rd period.
At 157 pounds, Berry rattled off consecutive tech fall wins over Alex Boukheir of Ohio Wesleyan and Quinn Brown from Niagara Community College. Brown’s teammate, Renso Montalvo would get some revenge on Berry, defeating him via 4-0 decision in the semifinal. The loss placed the EC standout in the 3rd place bracket, where he picked up a late win via fall over Ohio Wesleyan’s Luke Milanovich, breaking a 7-7 tie. Berry followed up with a commanding win via fall in the 2nd period over Niagara CC’s Kace Cook.
The EC men will next hit the mats on Wednesday, February 7th. The Soaring Eagles will travel to SUNY Brockport to take on a tough Golden Eagles team.
