Former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone said that he can see traits of motorsport icon Michael Schumacher in the current F1 champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

"Max Verstappen has a bit of Michael in him. But Max is not as merciless as Michael was, because Michael never thought about compromising," Ecclestone told dpa.

Verstappen has been dominating F1, winning three consecutive world titles in the past three seasons. This year, the Dutchman won 19 of the 22 races.

Schumacher, meanwhile, has won seven titles, a record he shares with Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. The German, however, suffered a serious ski accident in 2013 and has since been shielded by his family and not appeared in public, his health status unknown.

Ecclestone said he would like to see Hamilton claiming an eight drivers' championship title and breaking the record.

"I hope he can achieve that. He would make history," Ecclestone said.
