ECI volleyball Week 8 recap: Regular season is over, sectionals begin Tuesday

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Indiana high school volleyball regular season is officially over.

Sectional tournament first rounds begin on Oct. 11 and 13, with the semifinals and finals being held on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Daleville, Cowan, Shenandoah, Jay County and Blue River drew first-round byes, but several other East Central Indiana teams are taking Monday to prepare for what they hope is a deep tournament run.

Here's the first-round schedule for area teams, and a recap of the last week of the regular season:

  • Final Z-Ratings revealed: In the final IndianaPrepVolleyball.com Z-Ratings of the season, Yorktown finishes as Class 4A's No. 2, Wapahani finishes as 2A's No. 2, Muncie Burris finishes as 2A's No. 6, and Daleville finishes as 1A's No. 10.

  • Yorktown's Charlotte Vinson named to MaxPreps National Player of the Year Watch List: The Tigers sophomore on Oct. 5 became one of only 14 players in the country, and two in Indiana, to make the list. The outside hitter has notched 337 kills this season after totaling 354 as a freshman, and has added 138 digs and 50 aces.

  • Daleville Emilee Finley surpasses 2,000 career assists: With 104 assists in her team's four matches in the Prairie Invitational tournament on Saturday, the Broncos senior setter surpassed 2,000 career assists.

  • Jay County's Brenna Haines reached 1,000 career digs: With a career-high 38 digs in her team's 3-2 loss to New Castle on Oct. 6, the Patriots junior surpassed 1,000 career digs.

  • Wapahani wins Mid-Eastern Conference title: With its Senior Night sweep over Cowan on Oct. 5, the Raiders went undefeated in the MEC and won the conference title.

  • Wes-Del wins Maconaquah Invitational: The Warriors on Saturday won the Maconaquah Invitational, dropping just one set en route to defeating Southwood, Eastern, Culver Academies and Norwell.

  • Former Yorktown standout Kylie Murr climbs Ohio State volleyball rankings: With 20 digs in the Buckeyes' match on Oct. 7, former Tigers star Kylie Murr became the program's second all-time leader with 1,589.
