Range Beauty was created to address the makeup needs for skin types and shades that are underrepresented in the cosmetics industry. Alicia Scott, the founder, and CEO, was inspired to design diverse beauty products while working in New York City. Throughout her different fashion roles, she started to notice a pattern among the Black models: “They always brought their own makeup.”
Scott soon discovered that a makeup artist had told one of the models they “didn’t have the products they needed for her skin tone to complete this look.” This hit home for the budding entrepreneur, as she also struggled with finding products that complimented her beautiful complexion.
In addition to struggling to find her perfect foundation shade, Scott had to be mindful of ingredients that could irritate her eczema-prone skin. This drove her to launch Range Beauty — a clean cosmetics line for the forgotten shades and skin types — in 2018.

True Intentions Bronzing Primer
Before creating her makeup line, Scott experimented with a lot of primers that would leave her skin dry and ashy. “They would be like this really weird gray or white cast on my face,” she said.
The bronzing primer is packed with vitamin E to smooth and nourish skin, and it can be worn by itself for a “lit-from-within-glow.”
True Intentions Hydrating Foundation
Delving deeper into cosmetics marketed towards Black women, Scott learned that “women of color are twice as likely to be exposed to toxic beauty products” because many darker shades are not made with clean ingredients. And even when a brand does include richer makeup tones, the hues are disjointed and leave out groups of people. So Scott’s first foray with Range Beauty began with developing foundation that would work for all shades and tones.
The True Intentions Hydrating Foundation has a matte finish, but it is highly moisturizing thanks to nourishing oils and extracts. It comes in 21 shades and offers an array of undertones. “These are the shades that I saw were the biggest pain point for people that they didn't see in cosmetic aisles ... that they typically didn't see when brands would come out with their foundation launch,” explained Scott.

Scott has personally struggled with finding the perfect translucent powder and worked hard to craft the talc-free base to complement various complexions.

“I made these very, very pigmented to show up on the deepest skin tone,” said Scott.
When starting out, Scott could not have anticipated the success that would come her way. Beyoncé recently unveiled her Black Parade Route, a curated directory of Black-owned businesses, and Range Beauty is featured on the list.
“I was just like, oh my goodness, it’s incredible to just be recognized by your own. Then to be recognized on her platform and in such a way where she did it to make sure that we were given recognition and that we had more traffic driven to us, especially for us being a Back-owned small business. I am so appreciative of her... I still can’t believe it.”
Range Beauty is the perfect example of what happens when women support women in growing and loving themselves.
